The Tobacco Industry and Marketing Board will begin to disburse funds from a $200 000 revolving fund to enable farmers to construct rocket barns from June 2014.

It is said that the new barns were copied from Malawi and have the following advantages over the structures, currently in use in the rural areas:-

  • The curing process in a rocket barn will require half the quantity of firewood
  • Use of the rocket barn will result in reduced deforestation.
  • Quality of tobacco is expected to improve following the use of the new barns.
